🌱wise365: Permanence of the self, World Spirit, attention battery
A few minutes of philosophy for you - wise365
Happy wise365 Tuesday!
Here are 3 ideas to consider this week…
1. Permanence of the self
Is identity something intrinsic, a fixed essence that remains constant throughout life? Or is it fluid, shaped by experiences, memories, and social interactions?
Philosophers often debate the permanence of the self. But we need to be careful not to let abstract discussions about identity divert us from the practical task we all face: being open to change and growth in the face of the new and often unexpected experiences in our unfolding lives.
This idea is from today’s Academy+ philosophy lesson, An Introduction to Metaphysics (view the learning objectives at the end of this post). 🏫
2. World Spirit
Hegel believed that the World Spirit manifests itself through historical events, influencing the thoughts, actions, and aspirations of individuals and civilizations. This Spirit guides the course of history, leading societies to move forward in a dialectical process of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis.
I find it hard to go along with Hegel in thinking that history unfolds according to a rational process. Appreciating that many things in the world are not rational helps us to accept — and even welcome — the uncertainty in life and the world around us.
3. Attention battery
Focus on one task, work uninterrupted for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. Repeat this cycle up to four times, followed by a longer break. Reflect after each session to improve focus and productivity. (from Habits and Productivity: Timeless Wisdom for Building Better Routines)
When our attention wanders to distractions, we are using up the finite resource of time. Mindfulness of how we spend our time is key to living a more fulfilling life.
Until next week,
